According to NBC New York, a report published on April 23rd indicates that The Forest Hills neighborhood of Queens has suffered from several burglaries over the past few months. From late February to late April, 14 homes were ransacked; the crime rate has reportedly risen 93 percent since this time last year. In most cases, burglars stole money and jewelry, but have also gotten away with larger items like flat screen TVs.
The burglaries mainly took place within the district of the 112th Precinct, between Metropolitan Avenue and Fleet Street, and between 69th and Continental avenues. The area has increased patrol in recent months.
Police have urged residents to take precautions. The NYPD has sent out a notice of some things that they can do to keep safe:
????Park your cars in a well lit area.
????Lock all doors and windows.
????Activate your car?s anti-theft device.
????Do not leave any valuables in your car. This includes driver?s license, registration and title of your car. Any identifiable material may lead to a home burglary.
????Do not become distracted by arguments or fights. Incidents can be staged in order to take your property.
????Do not leave your wallet or pocketbook lying around.
It is also recommended to keep your home well lit, even if you are not home. A well lit exterior will prevent a burglar from coming too close. A bright interior will deter a burglar who may think that the home is occupied. By putting lights on timers, you can confuse and discourage a potential burglar.

To kick off barbecue season, fire up the grill this Memorial Day and rule the backyard BBQ by cutting calories with simple tips from Retrofit weight loss. Keep health sizzling and spare guests from going calorie-overboard this summer.
?The powerful heat of the grill can be one of the healthiest ways to cook, but if you are not mindful of your selections, it can be as bad as a deep fryer,? said Retrofit Lead Registered Dietitian Amy Margulies.
Margulies advises clients to choose healthy options from the low-calorie Retrofit Healthy Recipe Book and use it as a guide for seasonal recipes that can save calories and time.
Retrofit registered dietitians provide clients with reasonable ways to make small changes to cut calories that aggregate to big weight loss results. More than 90% of Retrofit clients are losing weight and 96.5% of them say they have made at least one healthy behavior change since beginning the year-long program.
The Retrofit program includes wireless monitoring of a client?s weight, activity and sleep, as well as private lessons with a registered dietitian, exercise physiologist and behavior coach via Skype videoconferencing. Clients learn how to change behavior by identifying areas where small changes can be made to incorporate healthy new daily habits.
This personalized coaching approach, enabled by wireless tracking, is gaining traction. Forbes.com calls Retrofit the ?front-runner in harnessing wireless and remote technology to help busy clients lose weight.? TechCrunch named Retrofit as one of the ?Hottest Health and Fitness Apps? of 2012.
?Small changes can significantly cut calories,? said Margulies, who recommends the following tips for mastering the calories that can add up fast at the summer grill:
Swap a hamburger for a turkey burger. A typical 4 oz. beef hamburger on a regular bun with one slice of cheese and 1 Tbsp. of mayonnaise adds up to 620 calories. Swap the traditional burger for a 4 oz. turkey burger in a lettuce wrap with 1 Tbsp of ketchup and a low-fat cheese slice and save 410 calories.
Consider lean cuts of meat for the grill. Lighter fare includes: chicken (without skin), lean ground meat, flank steak, pork tenderloin, or low-fat sausage. Just choosing turkey sausage over Italian sausage saves 100 calories savings per 4 oz. serving (176 calories versus 288 calories).
Replace meat with veggies. Grilled vegetables or vegetable kabobs with a brushed-on marinade are great addition to your plate, or can replace the meat altogether. They add color, fiber, vitamins and nutrients. The leftovers can be thrown into a whole grain pita for a super fast and healthy lunch, which you can bring to the office.
Go super-lean for that desired six-pack: A grilled shrimp or scallop kabob, fish fillet, or fish wrapped in a foil pouch fills you with tons of satisfying, metabolism-boosting protein, without any excess fat.
Swap Cole Slaw and Potato Salad for Veggie Salad. Eat twice the portion and save 200 calories and 23 grams of fat. Regular Cole Slaw (3/4 cup serving) = 150 calories and 11 grams of fat. Potato Salad (1/2 cup serving) = 230 calories and 13 grams of fat. As an alternative, a Mixed Green Salad (1 1/2 cups) = 33 calories and zero fat. Add 1 Tablespoon low fat dressing = additional 18 calories, .5 – 1 gram of fat
?Since the summer is full of festivities and celebrations, be mindful as you begin entertaining. Remember that there is no harm in splurging once and awhile,? Margulies said. ?Enjoy being in the moment, but get right back in gear afterwards. Keep in mind that all of the social gatherings are about celebrating with your friends and family. Moments can be as delicious as food.?

We were planning to go to Momotaro Rahmen; but then this new place caught our eyes. While looking at the menu outside, we were then greeted by the owner Toshi Maeda (Sake Master). He was very friendly and explained that he had just opened on Monday. The only thing that was served on the lunchtime menu was Okonomiyaki and it came in different flavours beef, chicken, vegetable and seafood. The interior was very simple and chic and still had a distinct japanese feel to the place. And upstair they have japanese bbq. Looking through the menu properly we discovered that it’s more a yakitori place rather than izakaya what we originally thought. The okonomiyaki very much reminded us of Japan. It was quite filling even though it was massive but enough to fill the hunger. The chicken was tender and cooked just right as was the beef. This was more the Osaka style of okonomiyaki. The okonomiyaki sauce was a little overpowering is a bit on the sweet side. Overall we were satisfied with our lunch. Lil’s suggestion was she would have like a noodle base okonomiyaki just like the one’s you get in Hiroshima. Toshi convinced us to try the dessert and we decided on the Soy Milk Panna Cotta. For the price is was great value. This was topped with blueberries and topping. We could taste the Soy milk in the panna cotta, but we felt like if we were having chinese tofu dessert. It was very silky smooth, maybe because of the gelatine or the soy bean wasn’t refined enough.
In the meantime, they are still waiting on approval on their liquor licence (1/5/08).
Once they get their licence we will definitely go back and try there dinner menu.

Many people think all credit cards are the same, but this is not true. Credit cards can have different limits, rewards, and even interest rates. Selecting the right credit card takes a lot of thought. Here are some tips that will help you select the right credit card.
Instead of just blindly applying for cards, hoping for approval, and letting credit card companies decide your terms for you, know what you are in for. One way to effectively do this is, to get a free copy of your credit report. This will help you know a ballpark idea of what cards you might be approved for, and what your terms might look like.
It goes without saying, perhaps, but always pay your credit cards on time. To be able to follow this simple rule, do not charge more than you afford to pay in cash. Credit card debt can quickly balloon out of control, especially, if the card carries a high interest rate. Otherwise, you will find that you cannot follow the simple rule of paying on time.
If you are having trouble paying off your credit cards, try negotiating with your creditors. You will be surprised at how willing they sometimes are to help consumers get their debt under control. You can ask for lower interest, or a payment schedule that you can afford. It never hurts to ask, right?
When using your credit card online, only use it at an address that begins with https:\. The “s” indicates that this is a secure connection that will encrypt your credit card information and keep it safe. If you use your card elsewhere, hackers could get hold of your information and use it for fraudulent activity.
When you are using your credit card at an ATM make sure that you swipe it and return it to a safe place as quickly as possible. There are many people that will look over your shoulder to try to see the information on the card and use it for fraudulent purposes.
Don’t open too many credit card accounts. A single person only needs two or three in his or her name, in order to get a good credit established. More credit cards than this, could actually do more damage than good to your score. Also, having multiple accounts is harder to keep track of and harder to remember to pay on time.
Make sure that you are aware of your available balance on your card and that you do not try to make purchases that end up getting declined. Many credit card companies see this as a bad things and they will be hesitant to raise your card limit if you ask them too later.
Emergency, business or travel purposes, is all that a credit card should really be used for. You want to keep credit open for the times when you need it most, not when purchasing luxury items. You never know when an emergency will crop up, so it is best that you are prepared.
If you have any credit cards that you have not used in the past six months, then it would probably be a good idea to close out those accounts. If a thief gets his hands on them, you may not notice for a while, because you are not likely to go looking at the balance to those credit cards.
The credit card that you use to make purchases is very important and you should try to use one that has a very small limit. This is good because it will limit the amount of funds that a thief will have access to.
Do not sign up for store cards in order to save money on a purchase. Often times, the amount you will pay for annual fees, interest or other charges, will easily be more than any savings you will get at the register that day. Avoid the trap, by just saying no in the first place.
If you are unable to make at least the minimum payment on your credit card bill, quit using the credit card right away and contact the credit card company. Let them know when you can make a payment and how much it will be. Follow through and make that payment to avoid further problems.
Practice sound financial management by only charging purchases that you know you will be able to pay off. Credit cards can be a quick and dangerous way to rack up large amounts of debt that you may not be able to pay off. Don’t use them to live off of, if you are unable to come up with the funds to do so.
If you ever have a charge on your card that is an error on the credit card company’s behalf, you can get the charges taken off. The way you do this is by sending them the date of the bill and what the charge is. You are protected from these things by the Fair Credit Billing Act.
To avoid interest charges, don’t treat your credit card as you would an ATM card. Don’t get in the habit of charging every single item that you buy. Doing so, will only pile on charges to your bill, you may get an unpleasant surprise, when you receive that monthly credit card bill.
If you feel that the interest rate that you are paying on your card is too high, you can call your credit card company and ask them to lower it. Many people do not know this and the credit card companies are not going to openly tell people that they may receive lower rates by request.
Consider making more than one payment each month. If you send out a minimum payment twice each month, you will get ahead on the balance and you are less likely to be late on your payment. It is easier for most people to make two small payments versus one big one.
Now that you realize that all credit cards aren’t created equal, you can give some proper thought to the type of credit card you might want. Since cards differ in interest rates, rewards, and limits, it can be tough to choose one. Luckily, the tips you’ve received can help you make that choice.

When it comes to making a jewelery purchase, you may feel overwhelmed on what to get. If you are properly educated on the topic of jewelry, this decision can be made a little bit easier. The following article is going to provide you with this necessary information so you will know what to look for in a piece of jewelry.
If you own nice pieces of jewelry, it is very important that you clean it regularly. You should purchase a nice cleaning liquid or polish that will make your jewelry shine even after years of wear. It is important to keep your jewelry clean because otherwise, the money you spent on the jewelry is just a waste!
When purchasing a silver plated piece of jewelry, immediately paint it with a coat of clear nail polish. Doing this will extend the life of the piece. It can also prevent those tiny scrapes and scratches that are so easy to get. Re-paint the piece once every few months for best results.
To make an outfit look more balanced, mix and match different kinds of jewelry. If you wear a statement necklace, you can pair it with some basic rings or bracelets. If you like to wear oversize rings, compliment them with a simple chain necklace. This will help to accentuate your more dramatic pieces and will keep your look from feeling like too much.
Opals are beautiful stones, and not only naturally contain a myriad of colors, but also their base matrix can be any of a number of gorgeous colors, including the classic white and black, but also including beautiful blue or vivid orange matrixes. Just don’t let them dry out; wipe them down with water regularly to avoid cracking.
Only purchase jewelry from well known retailers. If you are looking to purchase gold, silver or platinum make sure that the retailer has a professional set up and that their products come with a guarantee. Do not purchase from unknown vendors who claim that the jewelry they are selling at a discount price is made from real precious metals or gemstones, they are often imported fakes.
IF you’re thinking of buying your child jewelry, a charm bracelet is an excellent way to go. Add a new charm at every milestone, such as, his or her first lost tooth. When your child grows up, he or she will have a special story that is attached with each charm.
To make sure your necklace matches your outfit, look for pieces that mimic your neckline. If you’re wearing a v-neck top, pair it with a dramatic necklace that has angular elements. To compliment a scoop necked shirt, look for a necklace that’s rounded. A boatneck top looks best with a long, dangling necklace.
Few people realize that the color of their metal jewelry can actually complement certain skin tones. If your complexion is warm, golden, or bronze, you will find that yellow gold earrings, necklaces, and bracelets are your most flattering options. If your skin tone is cool or olive-colored, opt for silver, platinum, or white gold metals.
Use jewelry to add a signature flair to your wardrobe. Fashion accessories give a unique stamp to classic silhouettes that are worn by many people. How you adorn this classic look is what makes it yours. Let your jewelry reflect your personal style whether its bohemian and eclectic or clean and simple.
Many people think that pawn shops are shady places. However, when wanting to purchase jewelry, a pawn shop could bring you a great deal! Pawn brokers are highly educated in jewelry, know how to test for fakes and resell quality pieces. There are some great deals to be found in pawn shops, even for wedding bands!
Vintage jewelry can actually make great fashion accessories. It doesn’t have to be your granny’s jewelry any longer. Make a statement piece by displaying a vintage necklace or a pair of vintage earrings. Vintage seems to be all the new rage and almost every store out there seems to be selling vintage inspired pieces. Why buy “inspired pieces” when you can buy the real thing for a fraction of the cost?
To keep your rings from overpowering your hands, never wear more than two on the same finger. Rings can easily look excessive, and even a series of thinner rings can look overwhelming. If you are wearing an oversized ring, it is best to wear only a few other rings along with it.
Create a tribal look with your jewelry by layering necklaces and bracelets. Take the time to match up pieces of your jewelry that look good together. The look will not be achieved by just throwing on every thing you own. Pick necklaces of varied lengths and not just one length. When layering bracelets the smaller the bracelet the better. Use chunky pieces sparingly.
If you are planning to purchase a piece of jewelry for your wife or girlfriend but do not want to ruin the surprise, do some detective work. Stealthily, sneak a peek in her jewelry box or simply pay attention to the pieces that she wears the most. Take note of details like whether she favors gold or silver, thick or delicate chains, or diamonds versus colored stones or pearls. This information will help both you and the salesperson narrow down the selection.
When making jewelery such as a bracelet, remember that beads can be expensive. A good way to find cheaper beads is to go to a thrift store and buy jewelery that is on sale and deconstruct it and use it in your design. If you do not use all of the beads don’t worry, maybe you will later!
As was stated in the beginning of this article, purchasing jewelry can be an overwhelmed experience. However, now that you have some jewelry knowledge, going to a jeweler can be a more relaxing experience. Use the advice from this article to get a piece of jewelry that you can enjoy for years to come.
